To Drive the Cold Winter Away

Solstice Singers performing at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Middleboro, 25 South Main St., on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013. Performance at 4:00, followed by a festive soup, bread and dessert supper. All are welcome “To Drive the Cold Winter Away”.

Come enjoy the SOLSTICE SINGERS on Saturday, January 5th, in the candlelit sanctuary of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Middleboro, located at 25 South Main Street. The show “To Drive the Cold Winter Away” begins at 4:00, followed by hearty soups, baskets of breads and platters of desserts in the festive Parish Hall. The suggested donation for a great show and delicious supper is $25 and $20 for students and seniors. This is a family show appropriate for children ages 7 and older, and the family rate is $40 which covers 2 adults and the children. Child care for younger children is available upon request. For more information and reservations, please call the church at 508-947-1935. The snow date is Sunday, January 6th.

The Solstice Singers, under the direction of Lore Loftfield De Bower, is a Falmouth-based singing ensemble celebrating its 20th anniversary this season. The Middleboro performance will include some members of the children’s chorus Les Enfants de Soleil, along with members from the renowned early music instrumental ensemble Passacaglia. The program features Renaissance and Medieval music, song, dance, and poetry, including such favorites as the Boar’s Head Carol, Lord of the Dance, Sicut Cervus, and Coventry Carol. Romance, tongue-in-cheek fun, grief and sorrow (perhaps mock), and a bit of sweet and boisterous praise are all represented, reflecting the reverence and revelry of the season. The ensemble performs in colorful, authentic costume complementing rich harmonies to capture a sense of joy and wonder. Middleboro Unitarian Universalist members Susan and Dan Hotchkiss perform in this group. As the dark lingers, and the holidays fade, come and enjoy a festive evening with friends and neighbors. The music and food will feed your soul and help “to drive the cold winter away”!

A Letter from the Superintendent of Schools

To Members of the Middleborough Community,

It is with great sorrow that we learned today that children and adults in Connecticut were senselessly shot at school.  Our sympathies and prayers go out to all the parents, teachers, children and community members in Newtown, Connecticut.

I want to assure you that the Middleborough Police and I have been communicating during this school year and will continue to communicate to make the best decisions about the safety of all of our students and staff.   We have been discussing the safety procedures and protocols necessary to undertake in the event of an emergency.

Police Chief Gates, Lieutenant Ferreira, our safety officer, and I are organizing a walk-through during December vacation time so that all officers, especially new hires, will become familiar with the school geography.

All of our principals and assistant principals are actively  refreshing every staff members’ knowledge of the safety procedures necessary for daily school operation.  Keeping doors locked, keeping doors closed and not propped open, and general use of common sense help to keep us all safe.

Please know that Middleborough Public Schools  is invested in the safety of all who are within our buildings.  When you speak with your children about today’s incident, please assure them that they are safe in school.
