Wetland ID & Journaling Workshop at Soule Homestead

Wetland ID & Journaling Workshop
10 a.m. ~ 1 p.m.

Sharpen your observation skills and learn about field sketching and nature journaling with local artist and Conservation Agent, Tricia Cassady.

Drawing outdoors in nature is relaxing and creating a journal that includes written observations and poetry is an enjoyable pastime. "This is what Audubon did in his travels to understand birds." Tricia explains, "Scientists and Naturalists still use this skill today to better understand their subject."
Tricia is a multi-talented individual with a love for nature and the outdoors and finds ample subject matter from serving as Conservation Agent for the Town of Middleboro. Her favorite mediums include pen & ink and watercolor, which she learned to perfect through the Natural Science Illustration Certificate Program at The Rhode Island School of Design, graduating from the program in June 2006. Mrs. Cassady also holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Scientific Illustration. To see samples of Tricia's artwork, please visit her website:

The workshop is a great opportunity to learn about sketching using all kinds of drawing and painting materials. Tricia will supply some materials for people to try out during the workshop. "Everyone should bring a sketchbook, drawing pencils, colored pencils, watercolor paints and brushes, along with some felt tipped pens, if you have them" she says. Tricia likes micron brand pens for water resistant and pilot razor point for water soluble. Also recommended are a campstool or blanket, sunscreen, bug spray, and hat.
The workshop is weather dependent and limited to 15 participants (ages 10+).

Members: $8
Non-Members: $10

Volunteer Work Day at Soule Homestead on June 28th

Volunteer Work Day
9 a.m. ~ 1 p.m.

Enjoy getting outdoors, reconnecting with nature, and helping Soule Homestead tackle our summer to-do list. Last spring's Volunteer Work Days were so successful that two more Saturdays were added for the summer session on June 28th and August 23rd, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This month, the focus will mostly be on outdoor projects such as trimming, weeding and trail maintenance: barn cleaning. The list of tasks for August include cleaning the lower barn area and preparing the grounds for the upcoming Harvest Fair to be held September 20th and 21st.

Volunteering is a great way to get involved and get to know this organization from the ground up. The staff welcomes help from individual members of the community and family participation is always encouraged. Everyone is invited to bring a picnic lunch and stay beyond the scheduled work time to visit the farm animals and enjoy the scenery.

Whether you spend an hour or the morning, any amount of time you can offer will be well appreciated. Volunteer Work Days are held rain or shine and refreshments will be served. Please call the office with your availability, 508-947-6744 or email:

Ceramic Bowl Painters Wanted!

All Ages Welcome ~ No Experience Needed

Saturday, June 21, 2014

9 a.m - 12 noon
Become Part of a Special Fundraising Project to Benefit
Soule Homestead Education Center
Members of the community are invited to take part in a special ceramic bowl painting workshop at the Soule Homestead on Saturday, June 21st, from 9 a.m. until 12noon. The workshop is part of a community collaboration that joins volunteers, potters and other creative folks, in a fundraising project for the education center. People of all ages and skill levels can join in on the fun and all supplies will be provided.
The fundraising project entails contributions of hand-crafted bowls made by local artisans and bowls that are painted by volunteers from the community. The bowls will be offered for sale during the annual 'Soup and Bowl' Fundraiser Luncheon' to be held on November 8th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The volunteer-painted bowls will be sold for $10 each; donated bowls by various potters will vary in price. Participants will be offered a chance to pre-purchase their own hand-painted bowl for $8 (all bowl sales to include soup and muffin during the luncheon). Proceeds from the sale of these bowls supports year-round programming and helps maintain the Soule Homestead Education Center -- now in its 23rd year!

Soule Education Director, Laurie Amberman, is the coordinator for the workshop and 'Soup & Bowl' event and invites everyone from the community to become part of this special fundraising project. Donate a hand-crafted bowl or sign-up for the bowl painting workshop by calling the office, 508-947-6744, or email:

Meet Joe's Craz-zy Critters at Soule Homestead!

Sat., June 14th, 10 to 11am
Joe Kenny will share his love and knowledge of unusual, fascinating creatures during an entertaining and educational exotic animal show at the Soule Homestead Education Center in Middleboro. Children and adults will have an opportunity to see and touch unique specimens from around the world. Joe will discuss the differences between various species, their habitats, feeding requirements, and so much more. He will also explain which animals do not make great pets and will emphasize the pros and cons of owning them.

A paragraph from the website,, reads: "Joe's Craz-zy Critters Shows are fun, educational reptile shows with a close-up, hands-on approach to learning while having a blast. The shows feature creatures from all around the world ranging from small colorful snakes to a large, and I mean large, 12 foot python. The show also stars Tortellini, a large sulcata tortoise, among other interesting turtles. Let's not forget lizards, and there are a variety of these, including Monty, a large black throated monitor, and Blackbeard, a smaller, but friendly, crowd pleaser lizard from Australia. There are amphibians as well, those would be the frogs. Not to be left out are Spiders, Scorpions and other creepy crawly critters sure to send shivers down your spine and throughout the audience".

The fun starts at 10 a.m. and the cost for the one hour show is only $3 per person; children under 2 years may attend with their parents free of charge. Pre-registration for the show is required by calling the Homestead, 508-947-6744, or email:
